Whack-a-Weed

Continuing with more conceptual advertising style photography, I thought of how weeds just keep popping up even if you've pulled them yesterday. It's like they're taunting us in a never ending game. That thought made me have a visual of a blend between gardening and the old arcade game Whack-a-Mole. So I drew up a quick sketch.

I went about building a little set to shoot the underground section. The structure was simply pieces of cardboard taped together with holes cut in the top. I sprayed insulator foam on the inside and as it dried I sprinkled dirt crumbs on it and used some brown spray paint to cover up the white color of the foam.

Next I dug up some grass to lay on top and sprinkled some dirt on the table for the bottom of the photo. All that was left was to place the dandelion flowers under the holes and the bottom half of the image was complete. The sky was an image I shot a couple years ago and keep in my folder of cloud images. The model was shot against a blank wall.

The final product was actually pretty much what I sketched out with the addition of knees in the foreground to give the figure some context as to how he is interacting with the environment (sitting on his knees on the ground and whacking the weeds that pop up).

And again a very simple layout for the idea of the mock advertisement! :) Thanks for looking through this new project guys!!
